MEMORIES OF A JAZZ SINGER

LILIES

The ground was covered with leaves.
In some instances there was enough light
to discern the small wings of birds.

A moment spent with the sea
brought leaves flying,
centered the circling rain
and sunlight,
flashing in the mirrored brightness.

When her hands became tools
on that distant day of graduation
she welcomed the leaves,
pressing her face to the ground.
Ships filled with treasure
rode the waves of her eyes,
singing to the spirit of the leaves.

She carried each leafy color into her paint,
she made paintings,
she flew skyward.
Everything became leaves.
The sky was eucalyptus,
the air was pine,
the river a willow,
her arms vine covered walls.
She was a woman who became a tree,
until she discovered fish.

The ground was covered with fish,
as lilies stole into small empty places
waiting for her to notice
their flight.
